Re:Is it ok to give my baby a little formula while I am still breastfeeding?
Some women feel they can’t give their baby enough milk (which is usually not the case) and want to supplement the baby with formula. There is nothing wrong with doing that, especially at night when the baby needs a long night’s sleep. The downside of doing this is that the baby may become addicted to using the bottle because it is much easier than breastfeeding and the baby may begin to refuse to breastfeed.
The milk begins to dry up as all of this is happening and the baby is less and less fed by the breast until it is finally not breastfed at all. This doesn’t happen to everyone who supplements the baby’s breast milk with formula but you can see how the habit can develop.
It might not happen right away but as the milk supply dwindles, you do, in fact, finally not have enough milk to feed the baby and you are forced to use bottled formula more and more. For those mothers who work, you must use formula only when working and breast feed the rest of the time, in order to keep milk production up.
