I know of several mothers who successfully nursed twins without supplementing. The milk adjust to the needs of the babies and you will make twice as much milk as long as you are well fed and hydrated.

Other mothers just can’t handle the stress of nursing two babies or become concerned that they aren’t making enough milk so they breastfeed and then supplement with formula after each feeding. That way they can be certain that the babies are getting enough milk.

In other cases, the mother will nurse one infant and bottle feed the other. That way they get the excitement of nursing and can be sure than both babies are gaining weight and growing properly. It all depends upon what you’re comfortable with and what your breasts deliver for you in terms of volume of milk. Breastfeeding both is possible but it just may not be for you. Talk to a lactation consultant about breastfeeding twins if you have any concerns or questions.
