Default Re:My baby will only nurse from one side, what should I do?

Babies usually have a preference as to what side they like to nurse the best on as do moms. It may be that the baby latches on better to one side better than the other. It may be that the baby is just more comfortable being held on one side more than another.

The best way to tackle such a situation is to ignore the rule about starting breast feeding on opposite sides and only start breast feeding on the side the baby doesn’t like. He or she will be hungry and will nurse at least or a while on the side he or she doesn’t prefer.

Then switch to the preferred side to finish off the breast feeding. Your breasts will accommodate that sort of plan and the baby will likely accommodate the change, too.

Every so often, a nipple is inverted and the baby really won’t breastfeed on that side. Speak to a lactation counselor who may get you a nipple shield which brings the nipple out more and the baby will be able to suck better on that side.

If worst comes to worst, you may need to only breast feed on one side and supplement if necessary but this would be a rare occurrence. You should be able to get the hungry baby to nurse on the non-preferred side.
