Default How Should I Prepare to Successfully Breastfeed?

I am 28 weeks pregnant. I have heard that breastfeeding has many advantages and would really like to be able to nurse my baby. Is there any thing I should do now, while I am still pregnant, to help me nurse successfully once the baby is here?

You can call your hospital or birthing center and get the phone number of a lactation consultant. These ladies are a wealth of knowledge and are usually passionate about breastfeeding. They can be a great resource. Other than that, you can read books or articles about breastfeeding, check out the breast pumps available for rent and purchase, check out a breastfeeding class at your hospital and buy some good nursing bras.

Maybe most importantly, make sure that your doctor or midwife (and your labor and delivery nurses) know that you want to breastfeed as soon as possible after birth. If you have a written birth plan, this should definitely be included. Oh, and buy a nursing pillow! Your back and neck will thank you for it!
