Default constipation

my grand daughter is 13 months old, she has suffered from constipation most of her life, very painful constipation, it is so bad that she now tries to hold her bowel movements by squeezing her little buttocks together,of course that only makes it harder to pass when she can't hold it any longer, the Dr. presribed something called Lactulose which is a stool softner but it doesn't work, then he said miralax, which doesn't seem to be working much better, we are at our wits end, i am ready to take her to a GI. Help, i feel so sorry for her, she is miserable.

It is really painful to pass hard stools. Try to increase her water intake. This could hep soften her stools. Although it should be best to take her to a specialist so that immediate action could be taken.

Thanks Angela, she is a lot better, the stools are not hard, i think she is afraid that they will be and holds them in and when she does it makes them hard to pass later, we have started giving her Pear juice instead of White Grape juice and it seems to help, but if it continues i will suggest a specialist to my daughter, again thanks so much
Vivian.

Try giving her warm water. Add her intake of fruits and vegetables bcz they are high in natural fibers and that will help her.

There are several things you can do to prevent constipation. Among them:

Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread and cereal (especially bran). Fiber and water help the colon pass stool.
Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day (unless fluid restricted for another medical condition). Liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks, seem to have a dehydrating effect and may need to be avoided until your bowel habits return to normal. Some people may need to avoid milk, as dairy products may be constipating for them.
Exercise regularly.
Move your bowels when you feel the urge.
