Re:Is it ok if some water gets in my baby’s ear while I am bathing her?
It is perfectly fine to get water in your baby’s ears while bathing. The ear itself is protected by the tympanic membrane so no delicate ear structures are damaged when water gets to the ear. Even so, it is not a good idea to keep the ears filled with water as otitis externa or an external ear infection can occur, which is painful.
One way to keep the ears free of water is to use a Q tip and just touch it to the outside of the ear (do not put a Q tip in a baby’s ear) and allow the water to wick out of the ear onto the Q tip. It works really well and keeps the ear canal dry after a bath. Don’t use earplugs in your baby’s ears either unless advised by your doctor because your baby has tubes in his or her ears. In that case, they will have special ear plugs that protect the ear from moisture but can’t get caught in the ear canal.
