Babies should where sunscreen if they are exposed to the sun. Babies tend to have very delicate, fair skin and can burn easily when out in the sun. Use sunscreens specifically designed for babies and apply it as often as recommended, more often if the baby will get wet. For the most part, it is a good idea to protect the baby from the sun at that age in other ways, such as clothing, blankets or strollers that have coverings on them. Using these methods negate the need for sunscreen but if you think your baby will be exposed to the sun too much, apply the sunscreen as well.

If you can’t keep your baby out of the sun altogether, use a sunscreen that has a physical or chemical-free type of sunscreen. Physical sunscreens have zinc oxide in them or titanium dioxide on the label. The chemical sunscreens are okay for adults but can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions to the body because the skin absorbs the active ingredient in the sunscreen. If the baby is allergic to the ingredient, he or she can break out in a rash. There isn’t any evidence that chemical sunblocks are toxic or dangerous but you should stick with something that is definitely safe.

The best recommendations for babies is to keep them out of the sun altogether but sometimes, sun exposure can’t be avoided. In such cases, consider using a “physical” barrier sunscreen, one that sits on top of the skin and blocks the rays of the sun. These include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide such as Mustela sun block which contains both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Baby Blanket sun block also contains titanium dioxide. The other kind of sunscreen available for babies is less desirable. These sunscreens contain chemicals that absorb into the skin and block the effects of UVA and UVB rays. The chemicals aren’t toxic or dangerous but can cause irritations and allergic reactions if applied to those with sensitive skin.
Hawaiian Tropics makes a chemical sunblock for babies that will work as long as your baby isn’t allergic to it. Stick to a sunscreen for babies and look for the right ingredients; your baby will be protected from the damaging rays of the sun and won’t get burned. Apply the sunblock or sunscreen as often as recommended in the package.

There are some sunscreens that are considered safe for babies under six months.. as stated earlier the best option is to keep babies out of the sun, however, if necessary it's better to protect their skin. Some of the better formulas for babies include companies such as Arbonne's baby skin care line, California Baby, and Blue Lizard makes a "Baby Lizard". Always check to make sure the ingredients list is free of parabens and use the smallest amount possible on whatever skin you think may be exposed or get sun through clothing, rather than slathering over the entire body.

I use a combination of sunscreen, stroller shade, baby hats and picking and choosing the time of day when I'm out and about if at all possible.

I would be very careful and test any sunscreen in a small area before I used it to cover a large area. Even if there's no reaction I prefer lightweight clothing to covering my baby girl with sunblock because her skin is so sensitive.

you'd better avoid the sun until the baby is 6 months old, after that you've got a big choice of sunscreens..
