Re:Crying Every Evening - Help!
Hello, colic! The good news: this is a phase that will last a few weeks to a few months. The bad news: there’s not a cure for colic. My oldest son’s colicky period lasted for a few weeks (it was during my maternity leave – so probably between six and ten weeks old). He got ramped up at about 4:00 p.m. and didn’t calm down until about 8:00 p.m. Every day.
No one is really sure what causes these colicky phases, although some feel strongly that it is gas or some gastro-intestinal pain.
“White noise” worked well for my son. The sound of the vacuum cleaner, the dryer and the hair dryer calmed him down. The vibration of the bouncy seat was usually helpful too. Some people also use white noise machines that places like Brookstone and Sharper Image sell.
Other babies respond well to motion - try the sling, the front pack, the exercise ball, the swing or a ride in the car.
Some parents use gripe water, a homeopathic colic remedy with natural ingredients. Often, the pediatrician will recommend a change in formula or even a change in mother’s diet if the baby is breastfeeding. Baby massage, even just a good tummy rub, can help at times too. Trust me, after even a few days of colic, you’ll try anything!
And don't forget to take a sanity break when you need it - call a friend, your mom, a sister or your husband to take over for an afternoon.
