Re:What can I do for sore nipples?
The best way to treat sore nipples is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Most sore nipples are due to poor positioning of the baby, poor latching on or poor suckling (or a combination of these things).
The baby should be approaching the breast with the head just slightly tilted backwards. Then the nipple automatically points to the roof of the baby’s mouth. Run your nipple along the baby’s mouth very gently in order to get the baby to open its mouth widely, as if yawning.
Bring him to the breast as soon as you get the baby to open its mouth widely. Bring the baby’s lower lip out if the nipple still hurts and pull down on the baby’s chin. The same principle holds true whether you are using the football hold or are sitting or lying with the baby.
The baby must get as much of the areola in its mouth as possible. Allow your baby time to suckle appropriately; some babies take their time figuring it all out. They do make lanolin cream and other nipple creams for cracked and sore nipples but truly, effective sucking is what it really takes.
