Default Breastfeeding Hurts!

Throughout pregnancy I was determined to breastfeed. Finally, the baby is here and I have started nursing. Ouch! Nobody told me that this would hurt. Do I just have to bear it or am I not doing it right?

Default Re:Breastfeeding Hurts!

It shouldn’t hurt for too long. It does take a little while for your nipples to get adjusted to the process. They may get sore and chapped. If you pump at all, they might even bleed a little. This shouldn’t last very long at all if your baby is latching on and nursing correctly.

Use some lanolin to protect your nipples. It is helpful and safe for the baby. Let your nipples air dry after you’re finished nursing, if possible. Use breast pads that breathe (not plastic-backed ones).

And make sure that your baby is latching on correctly. It will make all the difference in the world. While your nipples may be sore or chapped, the actual breastfeeding itself – the sucking - shouldn’t hurt. If it does, you and the baby have something mechanically wrong that needs adjusting. Check it out ASAP.
