This morning my baby woke up with spots all over her cheeks, what are they?

Babies, especially newborn babies, get a condition called milia, which are white pearly bumps surrounded by a bit of redness. It occurs mostly on the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead and around the nose.

Babies can get them in their mouth or on their gums — a condition called Epstein’s pearls — which are completely benign and disappear after a couple of weeks. Milia aren’t a dangerous condition and no one knows the exact cause of them.

Up to forty percent of infants come down with milia, which can be temporarily unsightly and can look like acne on the face. There is no treatment for milia and they do not cause any symptoms. You can scrape off the lesions or squeeze the pearl out from underneath the skin but that tends to be painful and can cause scarring of the skin.

For these reasons, it’s best to leave them alone and do nothing with them but wash them as you would normally do. If one opens up on its own, that’s okay. Just wash it out and leave it alone. Babies get milia all the time and they aren’t generally affected by them.
