Re:My baby passes gas but hasn't passed a stool in 5 days should I be worried?
Bowel obstructions are very rare and would be accompanied by pain, bloating of the stomach and an inability to pass gas or stool. More commonly, a baby might not be getting enough liquid in his or her diet or might be getting too much iron in their diet so that the stools are drier and they don’t pass as often. This is when moms and dads should consider giving the child extra fluid, about 2-3 extra ounces per day, with or without a teaspoon of Karo syrup in the water.
The Karo syrup causes more water to flood the gastrointestinal system, making the stools softer and looser. A baby can easily go five days without a bowel movement and, as long as the baby is comfortable, the baby is just being sluggish about having a bowel movement. Give the baby extra fluids and he or she will do just fine. Some babies can’t be on iron containing formula so you’ll have to make a shift to low iron formula before the bowels are normalized again.
