Re:How long will it take my baby’s head to round out?
When a baby is born vaginally, it often is born with an elongated head that takes at least 3-7 days to go down to normal. The baby’s brain isn’t affected by this elongation; it is just what happens when the baby has a tight squeeze through the birth canal.
Many parents give their baby a hat to cover up the deformity until it normalizes. It can be associated with bruising of the head. There is one deformity of the head that sometimes takes several weeks to go down. That is what’s called a cephalhematoma. It’s when there is bleeding under the scalp that causes a squishy lump under one side of the head. It is really a hematoma and the collection of blood doesn’t often go away for at least 2 or more weeks. Fortunately it is rare to get a cephalhematoma and any deformity the baby gets will be gone within just a few days.
