Re:What should I do when my baby has diarrhea?
Babies can get viruses like rotavirus and other intestinal viruses that cause loose stools. Most of the time, if the baby is drinking and doesn’t seem listless or dehydrated, you can just feed the baby as normal and then wait until it passes.
You can also give the baby just sugar water in the bottle for a few hours and up to a day to see if that doesn’t stop the diarrhea. Finally, you can go out and by Peptobismol or Kaopectate, which soaks up the extra fluids in the stools and thickens the stool until the bug passes. You should not use Imodium in any form.
If your baby also has a fever and bloody diarrhea, you should see the doctor because it may be a bacterial infection of the bowels, which is more dangerous and which needs more careful treatment such as antibiotics and possibly hospitalization.
