Re:What should I do if my baby gets a bug bite?
You may not have to do anything if your baby gets a mosquito or biting fly bite. Babies do not react the same way we do and may not even show a wheal (red, raised mark) around the bite. If it does, then you should think about putting a dot of calamine lotion on it to keep it from itching or burning.
If the baby gets a bee sting, remove the stinger by flicking it off the skin rather than pinching the stinger (which only puts more venom into the baby). Then you can put a cold pack on the area to decrease swelling and pain. You can then put a dot of calamine lotion on the sting to reduce pain and itching. Tylenol works as well, too.
You shouldn’t put mosquito lotion or spray on your baby that contains DEET. Only the brands without DEET should be used if at all. Your baby should be covered when out in the areas where mosquitoes and biting flies are around. Incidentally, it is rare for babies to be allergic to bees but if you are concerned about a possible severe allergy to bees, seek medical attention immediately.
