Re:How often should I bathe my newborn?
Some parents bathe their baby every day, which I think is a bit excessive. Babies basically don’t get dirty except on their bottoms and those are wiped several times per day. If you want to bathe your baby, do it every two or three days.
Don’t use soap but you can use baby shampoo to wash the baby’s hair. Use a soft cloth to wash them all over and don’t use lotion afterward unless their skin is really dry. Lotion can be allergenic—even baby lotion—and can cause rashes and clogged pores. If you do use lotion, use it sparingly and use it mostly on the trunk arms and legs, avoiding the face.
Use a baby lotion and it’s up to you if you want to use lotion with fragrance. It smells good but if your baby gets a rash, switch to odor free lotion or don’t use lotion at all. Bathe the baby in a baby bath and not in the bath tub; babies are too slippery to hold onto in the bathtub. Some parents shower with their baby and this is acceptable as long as the shower isn’t too hot. Again, babies are slippery so you have to be careful not to drop the baby in the process.
