Re:My baby has little white bumps surrounded by pink skin should I worry?
This is likely called milia and is a part of a normal newborn’s skin. Babies have these bumps on their face and neck primarily and are 1 to 2 mm white cysts surrounded by a little bit of redness. When found on the roof of the mouth, they are called Epstein pearls. They occur in up to fifty percent of newborns and no one knows exactly what causes it.
They do not hurt or itch the baby at all and go away by a month of age, if not sooner. It is not a good idea to try and scrape them away as that can cause scarring of the skin. There is nothing to do with these and there are no prescription medications necessary as the milia resolve on their own. In stubborn or long lasting cases, the doctor may prescribe a retinoid cream or may manually extract the milia with a special tool.
