Re:How do I tell if my baby has thrush?
Thrush is a common disease of babies, especially neonates. It is a Candida or yeast infection that involves the mouth, lips and sometimes the vulva of babies who, by nature, don’t have the immune system to handle yeast yet.
In the mouth, it is called thrush, and it looks like patches of white on the insides of their cheeks, their tongue and on their lips. The white patches can’t be scraped off. This means they have thrush and should see the doctor for some nystatin suspension, a liquid put into the cheeks of babies who have the disease until it goes away.
Some doctors also recommend boiling all pacifiers and bottle nipples to kill the yeast and prevent the baby from getting it again. Yeast itself, isn’t dangerous, but it is unsightly and its possible that it itches or burns baby’s mouths. Once a baby gets older, around two to three months of age, he or she isn’t as likely to get thrush and you need to worry less.
