Should my baby always wear a hat when we go out?

Your baby should wear a hat during the first two to three days of life while inside and out because he or she cannot maintain their body temperature very well and they would lose weight out of the top of their head. It can be a simple cotton knit hat like they use at the hospital.

Then, what you do with your baby depends on your current weather conditions. Your baby should wear a hat when it is cold and/or rainy just like you would wear a hat. It would be a thicker hat and it might tie under its chin. It should have a snowsuit with a hood as well if it is winter weather. The snowsuit should cover the feet and hands and be warm enough for below freezing temperatures. If your baby will be out for a period of time, it should have mittens, too, and should wear several socks and/or shoes. The several socks idea is better because they are warm and they don’t fall off like shoes will.
