Re:It's winter time up here in New York! How should I dress my newborn?
Provided you have heat, a baby in the winter should wear a onesie on the inside, socks and probably a sleeper. It can wear a thermal sleeper if it is cool in your house. Use one or more receiving blankets to swaddle your baby and consider a hat if it is cool in your house.
Consider a hat, too, if the baby is premature. When going outside, you can use a snowsuit with a hood and a thicker hat along with something that covers the baby’s fingers, which may be attached or a part of the snowsuit. Use a thermal blanket to cover the baby’s face from the cold air and make your trips outside short.
Babies are built with a special kind of fat called brown fat which produces energy and prevents the baby from getting too chilled in cold weather. This brown fat lasts until they are about a year old so don’t be alarmed by taking your baby outdoors in the winter unless he or she has respiratory problems like asthma. This is rare, however, in infancy and it is generally perfectly okay to take your baby outside in the winter as long as you have dressed the baby properly.
