Re:My baby seems to want to sleep on her stomach, should I let her?
Years ago, it was perfectly acceptable to put babies on their stomach to sleep. Since then, there has been increased research showing that this position increases the risk for sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS.
They now recommend that you keep the baby on his side or back, especially during the first three months of their life. If your baby prefers her stomach, try to reposition to the side or to the back, if she’ll tolerate it. If it absolutely doesn’t work, you can put the baby on its stomach knowing that the risk is there.
Babies and moms and dads need their sleep and if you absolutely can’t get your baby to sleep any other way, taking the risk of SIDS may be the only real option you have. Make sure there are no pillows in the bed and no excess blankets. Make sure that the mattress is firm and that there is nothing that can suffocate the baby before even considering putting your baby on its stomach. It should be a choice of last resort as we can't possibly recommend it.
