Re:How long should my baby be sleeping?
Babies have different sleep habits and patterns so it’s important to know your own baby’s sleep requirements and habits. For example, babies in the first month of life sleep between 16 and 20 hours of sleep per day but they often get it in 2 to 4 hour increments.
By the time your baby is 6 weeks old, he might sleep as long as six hours at a time but still will sleep a total of about 16 hours per day. This is also true of a two month old, who gets hungry if he goes much beyond six hours at a time for a total of 16 hours per day.
A four month old may go as long as 8 hours at a stretch but will take at least one or two naps for a total of 14-16 hours per day. A six month old will get 14 hours of sleep per day and will sleep for at least eight hours at a stretch, sometimes longer. At one year, they still need about 12-14 hours of sleep at night and will get most of it at night, often needing a nap during the day if not two naps.
Every baby is different. My baby never slept through the night and was up to feed at least once every night. There was nothing I could do to change that. Go with what your baby’s schedule is and don’t overtire your baby.
