Re:Is Baby in Our Bed Safe?
You absolutely should be concerned. But that doesn’t mean that he can’t sleep with you. As long as you are aware of the need to be concerned, you’re probably in good shape. You’ll need to make sure that he is not covered or surrounded by a fluffy comforter or blanket. Keep him away from the pillows. Anything that could get pushed up against his face and keep him from breathing.
Have you tried a co-sleeper? In that, your baby is right next to you in bed without any barrier – you can keep a hand on his tummy even – but he’s actually in his own little bassinet contraption. This makes it impossible for you or your husband to roll over on him or push him.
If either you or your husband have used drugs or alcohol before bed, your baby should absolutely NOT be in bed with you. Your impaired state could keep you from realizing that you’ve rolled onto your baby or pushed him under a pillow or off the bed.
