Re:Nursing Twins: At Same Time, Need Special Pillow?
As far as nursing schedules, I’d give it a try both ways and follow your babies’ lead. Whatever works for them will likely work for you. If they tend to eat differently (i.e., one is quick and one is pokey), you may not be able to nurse them both at the same time. Be flexible and adjust your expectations to their needs.
There are several different twin feeding pillows on the market. When I had my twins, I held off (at the suggestion of my lactation consultant) on buying the pillow. She, quite smartly, said that I should see how they wanted to nurse first. The lactation consultant and the nurses will help you set up regular pillows at the hospital to try simultaneous nursing. You may end up with one baby who loves to breastfeed and one who doesn’t like it at all (that ended up being my situation!). And then you’ll have to re-think the whole plan.
This is definitely an area that I think you would benefit from working with a lactation consultant. She will have experience and ideas that will be tailored to your specific situation and your babies’ likes and dislikes. Good luck!
