Re:Breastfeeding Twins
No way. It can be a challenge but you can absolutely breastfeed twins. They even make double breastfeeding pillows to help. Your body should react to the demand of two babies by producing more milk. I think that a large number of twin mamas are successful breastfeeders.
But I will say this: try not to stress yourself out about nursing twins. Some women and their twins can do it. For others, it doesn’t work out. Sure, you’d like to breastfeed but don’t make yourself crazy trying to do it.
I hoped to nurse my twins. My first son refused to nurse for weeks. I fed him pumped breastmilk by bottle (supplemented with formula at times) for almost five months. My daughter was a champion nurser from birth. I nursed her for four months (only quit because I was a less than diligent pumper at work). With my twins, the bigger one wanted to nurse all the time, for long stretches. The little one had no interest in breastfeeding at all. So, I nursed one and pumped for the other – for two months – until I was stressed and exhausted and gave myself permission to get over the self-imposed guilt.
Talk with your lactation consultant and try some breastfeeding classes. And I wish you the best of luck!
