Re: When to Tell the Boss You're Pregnant
Everyone’s situation at work is different. Your boss is different than mine. But I do think it’s usually a good idea to wait. As you know, your likelihood of miscarrying is less after the first trimester – so a lot of people wait until they’re “out of the woods” to tell. If something unfortunate were to happen, you’ll have fewer people to tell the bad news. And I think it’s nice to have that extra time to think about your gameplan for maternity leave anyway.
You can use the excuse of the first trimester risks as your reason for not telling the boss for a while. No one can really argue with it. And then you’ll be prepared to discuss your maternity leave, your expectations and your plans for the transition. You want to be the one in the room who has thought everything through, appearing extremely professional and responsible.
But there’s certainly no rule. If you want to share the joyous news from the rooftops, it’s certainly your prerogative! Congratulations!
