Default What to Look for in a Stroller

My husband and I were looking to buy a stroller last weekend for the baby we are expecting. But there are so many different kinds and some cost almost as much as a used car! What should we look for in choosing one?

Decide what your priorities are first. If you’re just buying one (and you’re right, they are expensive), you’ll want one that will transition well from infant to toddler. That’s going to rule out prams (old fashioned baby buggies) and umbrella strollers. The buggies are only good for babies who can’t sit and hold their heads up yet. The umbrella strollers are only good for babies who can sit and hold their heads up. Jogging strollers are not generally built for newborns either.

Look for a stroller with a seat that fully reclines or a convertible stroller that can hold an infant carseat/carrier. There are many different styles of just the convertible strollers! They range from the common Graco and Evenflo models to the more trendy and more expensive Orbit models. I found these very handy when my babies were still in the bulky infant seats. You just click the carseat onto the stroller base and go. And you don’t have to buy a whole new stroller when the baby outgrows the carseat.

When inspecting all of the different models, track them down in person and actually “test-drive” them in the store. You may feel silly but it’s really pretty important. My husband is 6’4” and several of the strollers we tried felt too short for him. There were other models in which we both repeatedly hit the foot brake with our walking stride. Do the wheels pivot nicely? Is it ridiculously heavy or difficult to fold and unfold? This is a piece of equipment you’ll be hauling in and out of your car – make sure that it’s manageable.

Ladies – have I missed anything important?

I actually write stroller reviews for a website, and I find that different mothers are looking for different things. How many children you have will also change what you're looking for. I highly suggest a stroller that is:

*lightweight
*doesn't take up a lot of trunk space
*has a parent tray & a large basket underneath for your diaper bag, etc.
*can be opened & closed easily
*easily pushed through rough terrain

I think those are the most important points that make a stroller great.

Ease of pushing and manuevering, ease of opening and closing, locking brakes, storage for keys, drink, and diaper bag if a regular stroller vs. jogging-type stroller. Oh, and lightweight for sure!

Don't forget to test drive it like our dear administrator already pointed out. If your stroller is a pain to steer, you will be miserable! We took our nieces and nephews out a couple of weeks ago and I was pushing one of their strollers for a while and it drove me nuts! I was ready to go buy them a good stroller that night.

I'll tell you right now that I tested and used the Stokke Xplory and it is AWESOME and transitions from newborn to toddler easily! It also has an option to add your Graco onto it--so you just buy the base!

This one stroller is a buggy, a jogging stroller, an umbrella stroller and toddler stroller in ONE!

There are 12 things that you should look for when you want to buy a baby stroller.

1. Think safety - does the baby carriage have a safety belt that includes a crotch strap? Without this handy device small children can slip out from under the belt.

2. Does the baby stroller have a good breaking system that will allow you to park the stroller, even on an incline and not worry that it is going to go rolling down the street?

3. You will want to make sure that your baby carriage folds easily and stores within the trunk of your car or other spaces.

4. Does the baby stroller have an adjustable handgrip so that both parents can use it comfortably?

5. Washable fabric is a must. No baby, no matter its lineage is above mess-making, crumb crunching, formula spilling or an occasional runny nose.

6. Does the baby carriage contain storage area? If you take the baby shopping, you will want a place to put groceries, packages, purses, bags, formula, spare diapers, toys, coats, and kitchen sinks.

7. A canopy to protect the baby during inclement weather is a convenient feature.

8. Does the baby stroller have an adjustable seat? One thing we know about babies is that they grow. A seat that was comfortable for a one-month-old might not be comfortable for a one-year-old.

9. Is the baby carriage metal or plastic? A metal stroller is usually more durable, however, plastic components tend to be lighter. There is a trade-off here. Your call.

10. Price is always a factor. Remember that the more expensive models are usually built with higher quality materials and are likely to last longer. This is more of a factor if you intend to use the stroller for several children.

11. Speaking of several children. You may want to get a baby stroller with multiple seats. With children who are close in age or twins this is handy to have on any outing.

12. Do you plan on taking your child with you when you jog? There are jogging strollers specifically designed for this purpose.

You can find one that suits your needs. Handy and lightweight is a great plus. It should also have safety brakes and wheels should be fine even if the floor is slippery. Try to bring your baby when your looking for a stroller in order to test steering the stroller with your baby.
