We are excited to expect our second child in three months. Our daughter will be 15 months when the baby is born. This means I will definitely need a double stroller to get out of the house. What do I need to consider when choosing one for our family?

Tandem or side-by-side is the major choice. Each has pros and cons. A tandem stroller (one seat behind the other) is much narrower and easily fits through doors and in aisles. They are usually engineered to allow an older child to sit in the front while the baby lies in the back set (unless she is in her infant carrier). They are fairly cumbersome to push and pretty hard to steer though. It’s kinda like driving a bus – a lot of logistics involved.

The side-by-side is much easier to steer and fold. It is, however, wider and more difficult to fit through doorways. Many of the side-by-sides lack the ability to fully recline for an infant. And, with different weights in the seats, you may be off-balance.

You’ll also want to decide whether you want the double stroller to be compatible with your infant carseat. Many double strollers have the capacity to carry an infant carseat by clicking it on. Just make sure that the one you choose is compatible with your baby’s carseat.
