Default Re: Can I Give Baby Fennel Tea for Colic?

Fennel, ginger and chamomile are all proven to ease the symptoms of digestive problems and, not coincidentally, are the ingredients of gripe water. All three are GRAS (generally regarded as safe), but this depends on the age of your child. If you are nursing, I suggest YOU consume the fennel tea to help ease your baby's symptoms.

If your baby is over three months old and you are not nursing you might consider making a homemade version of gripe water. Here is a link for a recipe on my blog: Homemade Gripe Iced Tea Holistic Familia Blog

If you decide to use fennel tea, be sure that the other ingredients or herbs in the tea are safe. I highly recommend simply buying organic fennel seeds and boiling in some water (you can add a couple of raisins to the boiling water to sweeten-- some babies don't like the taste). You can give a little to your baby on a small spoon or use a medicine dropper.

I hope this helps!

I would never recommend giving tea of any kind to a newborn or "colicky" infant. If you are breastfeeding, you can make yourself a blend of fennel and chamomile tea, and within 20 minutes or so, their soothing effects will reach your breastmilk. And be sure you nurse the baby frequently, remaining on one breast until it is virtually empty (lactating breasts are never totally empty). Also, I recommend an infant massage class! It's great for moms to learn how to soothe their babies through touch. And while Happiest Baby on the Block gives some very helpful strategies for soothing babies, I would caution against focusing on the strategy more than the baby's communication efforts. If you're using the tools to facilitate connection with your baby, great. If you're just looking for a way to make the baby stop crying, I would encourage you to shift your focus to connecting with your baby.

Hi, I own a massage therapy clinic and have had excellent results teaching new mom's how to do quick and easy bodywork techniques on their babies to reallly stop the colic altogether. If you would like to inquire about this class, please call AMS Massage Therapy, Inc., 303-756-7950. I am the owner to the clinic and would be happy to schedule a class with you.

Yes I've heard that before, that fennel tea helps colic in babies. As far as I remember you can just use a tea bag in a bottle and put boiled water on the top just as if you were making a cup for yourself, then let it cool before giving to the baby. If you're breastfeeding then either spoon/syringe or cup feed it to the baby.

I have never heard of giving fennel tea to babies, I did look it up on google though and found confusing advice on it! I would recommend talking to your pediatrician. If you're wanting a quick remedy...I used mylacon drops my kids..

Tea Works! My daughter still has colic (11mo old) from acid reflux. Anyone in the same boat will know it makes it almost impossible to nurse because after few gulps of milk they unlatch and throw their head back, at least in more severe cases.

I also was a colicky baby. When Rx medicine didn't work for me the Dr.s told my mother to use fennel tea (7 mo old). Rx medicine also helps my daughter, but she has a horrible time sleeping because of stomach acid coming up on her. I started giving her an ounce of fennel, chamomile & peppermint tea before bed and she only wakes up to eat now!!! These are all ingredients in gripe water, by the way.

I doubt many Dr.s will reccomend this because most herbal rememdies are not approved by the FDA and everyone loves to sue these days. Good luck to all the moms of colicky babies and try to remember they will outgrow it one day...

I would recommend Gripe Water instead.
You should used it like this: for children between 1-6 months 1 teaspoonful 4 times a day and more than 6 months 2 teaspoons four times daily.

Some of these things include giving small, frequent feedings and soothing your baby with skin-to-skin contact during feedings. Also feeding your baby is a calm, safe place can help digestion flow more easily.

I think both are not same things. Its totally different as for Fennel and fenugreek. Mother milk more useful than anythings else.

For the Baby Mother Milk is very much Important For atleast Six Month...
Because with this they get Total Protein and After that you should start giving other Protein rather than Just Mother milk......
