Re:When should I start to brush my baby’s gums?
Before the baby’s teeth come in and during a bath, you should use a wash cloth or piece of gauze wrapped around your finger to gently wipe away any bacteria the baby might have on its gums. Do this daily and without any toothpaste until the teeth begin to come in. When the teeth have popped through, buy a tiny baby toothbrush and brush their new teeth with water only.
You don’t need to use toothpaste until they are at least a year old. Babies tend not to like toothpaste and you want to make the tooth brushing experience as good as possible. That’s why just a little water and nice soft bristles will be enough after the teeth erupt to clean the teeth. As your baby gets older, he or she may be taught to brush their own teeth but it might take until they are two to three years old before they do it right without supervision.
The idea behind brushing is to remove the bacteria that cause decay and plaque on the teeth. Simple brushing will take care of that if done on a daily basis.
