Can I breast feed if my baby is sick?

It is harder to breastfeed when your baby is sick, especially if the baby is congested with a cold. When it nurses, it needs to breathe out of its nose, which is difficult if it is congested. The trick is to suck out the nose with a bulb syringe right before nursing and then periodically during nursing if the baby can’t breathe well while nursing. The baby won’t like this very much but it is the only way to nurse effectively.

If the baby just has diarrhea or a fever, nursing is good for the baby and you should continue to nurse unless your doctor suggests a period of just drinking water during a diarrhea episode. In that case, you should pump your breasts and save the milk for another time.
