Re:Should I get an infant seat or a convertible car seat for our new baby?
There are pros and cons to whatever you choose to use as a car seat. Convertible car seats will last you until your child is around 35 pounds but in the beginning may seem like your child is drowning in it. Most have adjustments for newborns, however, and work for forward facing and rearward facing units.
An infant seat can be one that locks into a base and has an infant carrier with it. While it is fairly convenient, it doesn’t last for longer than twenty pounds and often doesn’t work once your baby wants to sit up in the car seat. While it carries the convenience of the handle and carrying aspect of the seat, it is sometimes difficult to lock the carrier into the base and takes a bit of practice to get it to lock in just right. Some of them come with a stroller system as well but again, they don’t last as long as convertible seats and you will have to by a forward facing seat as your baby grows.

Re: Should I get an infant seat or a convertible car seat for our new baby?
In my opinion, you need to go for the safest choice.
When it comes to car seats, taking the time to research which types and which brands are up to date on safety protocols is worth it. Recently there was a study done on the infant car seats with a seperate base and only two brands passed safety guidelines. So, it seems that in most cases, a convertible car seat is safest, although less convienant.
Research it online, and try to have your car seat installed by a certified profiessional.

We also did a ton of research online and found that while you have lots of choices, not all car seats offer the same protection and safety. We opted to spend more based on reviews and recommendations, and while it's always hard to justify spending more when you see cheaper alternatives, this was one area where we didn't want to skimp!

Re: Should I get an infant seat or a convertible car seat for our new baby?
For #s 2 and 3 I chose a convertible seat that stayed in the car all the time. I had an infant seat with #1, which he promptly outgrew at 4 months when he weighed 20 pounds. Carrying around a baby in the seat was hard too - combined they weighed a lot! With #s 2 and 3 I carried them in a sling instead - it was much easier.

At first the idea of the infant seat is great but like everyone else has said it gets quite heavy and they out grow them so darn fast...the plus side is that you never have to distrube the baby if it is sleeping while in the infant seat...

It looks like convertible car seats may be safer? Are there any particular brands that you recommend?

Re: Should I get an infant seat or a convertible car seat for our new baby?
In my view For babies under a year old, we need to be very careful about baby and install the seat in the back seat, facing the rear. When your baby weighs at least 20 lbs.and is at least 1 year old, you can turn the seat around to face forward but experts now say it's safest to keep your child rear-facing as long as possible.
