Default Family Planning Welcome Home Party at My House!

My family is so excited about our new baby that they are planning a big party at our house for the day when we bring the baby home. I really appreciate it but how can I tell them that we would rather not have a house full of people on our first day at home? I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

They weren’t terribly concerned about your feelings when they planned a party at your house without getting your approval or consent. Don’t worry about their feelings. Don’t be nasty about it but be direct and honest. Just say “You know, I really appreciate how excited you guys are about the baby and how much you guys are putting into planning this party. But I think I’m going to be really exhausted and probably in some pain when we get home and I’d really just like a few days to figure out what we’re doing before we have a ton of people over.” Tell them that you’d love to see them and share the baby with them but not in a huge group so soon.

If they seem like they don’t get it or ignore your pleas, you’ll have to be totally frank. “I’m sorry but we can’t have a big crowd over here the first day home. No party yet. I’ll let you know when we’re ready.”
