Default Tips on Saving Money on Formula?

Unfortunately, breastfeeding didn't work for me and I had to switch to formula. I would appreciate any tips on saving money when buying formula!

Register with your formula manufacturer via their website and you will get coupons and checks in the mail for the purchase of formula. You may think that the checks are just coupons for $5.00 off but they are really actual checks (which can confuse the cashier if he’s new) and you can use them AND coupons too to get additional savings.

Ask your doctor if his or her office has any free samples. They very often do. When I had my twins, I walked out of their first doctor’s appointment with an entire case of sample size formula canisters.

Check the store brands. Compare the nutrient lists on the side of the store brand and the name brand. If you have any questions about the comparison, ask your doctor what he or she thinks. Then buy the store brand if it’s cheaper but equally nutritious.

Make sure that you know the “per ounce” price. You might have to break out the calculator function on your cell phone but do the long division – you need to know if the price is better at WalMart or at Costco but the canisters are probably slightly different.

One last note: when I was buying formula for my twins, Similac decided to change the size of the large canisters they sold through Target, cutting it down by a few ounces. So, Target put the “discontinued” size on clearance! It was a GREAT price and was hidden on a random endcap display in another part of the store. So, I bought about 20 canisters at once. Be prepared to act on clearance sales when they happen (as long as the expiration dates are far enough away).

I've made my own formula. Many docs are against that, so I wouldn't try it unless you really know what you're doing. I may post my personal recipe later if enough people are interested, but you'll have to be aware that I am not a Dr, just a mother who has done this with her own children, what works for my child might not for yours!!

As to canned/powdered formula, I use Little Ones DHA and ARA from Kmart. It is made by Wyeth Labs, they make most store brand formulas. Little Ones at Kmart is the most cost effective, in my area it costs around $13.00. My children all used it and never had any issues.
