Default Are Bassinets a Waste of Money?

I love those cute little bassinets. They are just adorable. But are they worth buying or really a waste of money?

I certainly have some friends that used them with several babies. And I’m sure we’ll hear from others here shortly who will disagree with me, but I always thought they weren’t really worth it. They can only be used while the baby is very small. Once they are starting to try to roll over, you’ll need to move them. I had much better luck with the bassinet insert in the play yard/pack n play/portable crib. Baby could nap where I had it set up (usually the corner of my room, the guest room or the unused living room). With the insert, I didn’t have to bend over too much. And the whole thing was still useful after four months – not as cute, but still useful!

Dissenting opinions? Anyone?

Oh, this is such a hard one for me. Logically - I totally agree. A formal bassinet is not worth the money. As our WombToBloom administrator said - they have such a short lifespan that it's not really worth the big bucks... But... Oh, who can resists all the beautiful classic ruffles???? Did any of us not dream about our little babies in those beautiful bassinets??? I didn't use one for babies #1 or 2. They were expensive and the bassinet insert in our portable crib worked just fine for us (not to mention the full-size crib). When my sister was pregnant with her very first child though I couldn't resist - I bought for her the bassinet that I'd always wanted! When I had baby #3 she passed it along to me and I loved it! I only used it for 3 short months, but it was soooo nice to have downstairs with the baby napping in it when we had company. Just for show really, but it was a fun luxury. I've also had it around for our little girl and, as she's just now turning 3 months, she's almost out-grown it.

All things being equal, it's really just a nice thing to have for fun/show. Definitely not something that you need. If you have the money to burn, go for it. But know that it's a very short-lived show piece. If you're lucky enough to have sisters/close friends in the baby mode as well maybe you can get together and buy one to share amongst you as my sister and I did. If you like the frills, I have to admit, it's nice to have.

I agree- it is nice to have and traditional for sure. But, if you are on a budget and something has to go, this item could be it. I used one for my youngest, not my first (born) baby. They are both just fine LOL
