Default Baby Only Rolls in One Direction!

My baby boy has finally started to roll through the house. Unfortunately, he only rolls backwards instead of forwards. He is very frustrated because instead of getting closer to what he wants he gets farther away the harder he tries. What is he doing wrong?

Do you mean that he’s only rolling left instead of right, or vice versa? If so, he’s using the same muscle motion for every roll instead of translating the action to the opposite side of his body. It could be that his neck and back muscles are less developed on one side. Or it could be that his muscle memory is tuned into that left-side roll. You can encourage him to develop the right-side skill and muscles by placing toys to his right and gently guiding him in that direction. Keep doing it until the muscle memory is there for him. It may take a while for the muscle strength to develop but keep helping him. You may also want to think about switching the direction he lies in his crib. Some babies get used to their heads being at one end of the crib – therefore, they are always looking for you on one side of the crib. Their necks become accustomed to holding their little heads in that one direction. Similarly, you can switch directions on the changing table.
