Re:What should we pack in my carry-on bag when traveling with our baby?
When you are traveling with a baby you need to have several things handy on the airplane for the baby and some of what you choose depends on how long the flight is.
Security in the US allows for formula but it doesn’t keep well in a warm environment so you may wish to pack dry formula and buy bottled water enough to fill the bottles on the other side of airport security. You should pack diapers enough for the trip, including any layovers or delays you may have while flying.
You can change your baby on the tray table in front of you on the plane. You should pack an extra sleeper or outfit in case of an accident and if your baby is old enough, you should pack whole small jars of baby food that haven’t been opened. Use the whole jar in one sitting or it won’t be able to be saved from one feeding to the next. Pack a pacifier if your baby uses one.
In fact, pack two in case the baby or you lose one of them. Pack a rattle or small toy for the baby to be diverted with and think about packing a small bottle of Tylenol because babies often experience ear pain on descent of the airplane. You may want to pre-medicate your baby before the plane starts its descent.
You’ll also want to pack several clean empty bottles or bottles you’ve pre-measured with the amount of dry formula necessary for the bottle. The formula will be room temperature or cold depending on the bottle of water you buy but your baby will have to tolerate it.
It is not easy to travel with a baby on a plane. They are often fussy and disturb other passengers. If you pack well, however, your baby’s needs will be easily met with the items you bring along in your carry-on bag.
