I can barely believe it. The doctor just told me that I am carrying twins. I am thrilled but also a bit worried about whether we can afford two children at once. What are some good ways to save money with twins?

First, understand that you don’t need two of everything. It’s nice to have two of some things. But they don’t need to wear matching outfits every day. They can alternate turns in the swing or the exersaucer.

Second, borrow, borrow, borrow! I had twins as my #3 and #4 children. So, we had one of a lot of baby gear. And my girlfriends came out in force to provide me with other things – like an extra bouncy seat, an extra high chair and a second pack ‘n play.

Third, buy second hand. Garage sales, consignment shops and, the Holy Grail, mothers of multiples club sales all have great deals on a variety of items from furniture to clothing. You can pick up a second crib and a good double stroller for at least half of retail.

Only buy one of baby gear! Lots of clothing though. Go to Craigs List, Ebay, and consignment shops and put the word to family and friends that you need stuff for twins. You will find stuff on your porch as soon as the word is out. Ask friends and neighbors to give you a diaper shower if the family is giving you a regular shower.

I would second the multiples clubs idea. Most cities/areas have multiples clubs and their annual or bi-annual sales are amazing. Consignment shops are also wonderful places and you may not find exact matching items at the same store, but you will definitely find bargains. Just be careful that any items you are buying have not been recalled by the manufacturer for any reason.

Our Multiples Club has awesome next to new sales two times per year. It is a great place to get stuff. Also if you seek out your local club and join, you may be able to purchase things from other MOMs that have outgrown that stage. We have a classified section on our member website. When it comes to things you will absolutely need that you may have to buy two of like car seats Babies R Us will give a 10% discount, you just have to ask. Toys R Us gave us the same discount since we do not have a Babies R Us.
