Default High Stress Job and Pregnancy

My job is very stressful and I work long hours. It took us over a year to finally conceive and I do not want to endanger this pregnancy in any way. Is it likely that work related stress will have a negative impact on my baby's development?

There have been studies which have related high maternal stress to preterm labor and low birth weights. There was also a recent preliminary study which suggested that high maternal stress might impact fetal brain development, causing psychiatric and behavioral disorders. The scientists did indicate that a lot of follow-up research was necessary to confirm and flesh out these findings. So, it’s not a certainty that high maternal stress will cause problems – but it seems like a good idea to avoid stress where at all possible.

Try to find ways to reduce stress if at all possible, too, even when you leave work. Try to get some light exercise in.. walking, perhaps. Get some prenatal massage, even if it's from hubby . Try meditation, journaling, and of course, relying on some close friends and family. You may even be able to get your ob/gyn to write a note requiring you to take a certain amount of breaks a day at your job. Pregnancy isn't an illness, but it is a cherished time in your life! Take care of yourself and your precious little one.
