Default Want to Breastfeed but Worried About Nipple Confusion after Returning to Work

I really want to breastfeed but am unsure whether it will work out as I plan on going back to work three months after delivery. I have heard that babies get confused if they are fed by bottle and nurse. Is that true?

Some babies are. But you can do things in those first three months to lessen that possibility. I think most experts recommend exclusive nursing when possible for at least a month or so – just to allow everyone to get used to the process, to get vital nutrients to the baby and to get your milk production ramped up. But then, as you get closer to your return to work, you can start introducing breastmilk from the bottle on occasion. She’ll probably hate it at first but will eventually come around. Ease your way to a schedule which mimics that which you’ll follow upon returning to work – nurse in the morning, bottle several times during the day, nurse in the evening and night. Make sure that you also get your baby used to OTHER people feeding her the bottle – make this job your husband’s, your mother’s or your best friend’s.
