Default False Period?

My BFF is pregnant--or at least she *may* still be pregnant...

She is 6 weeks along and she bled like a period yesterday--she took a pregnancy test and it said NEGATIVE after 4 pregnancy tests a few days earlier said positive

She called her Dr. today because the bleeding stopped and he said that she MAY be pregnant still?? That some women have a "false period" and so she has to go in tomorrow to find out via a blood test.

Anyone ever have this happen??

OMG, that's so scary. Honestly the same thing happened to me at 6/7 weeks between babies #3 and #4. It turned out I had miscarried. The negative pregnancy test is probably not a good sign. The only way to know for sure is to go to the doctor. On a positive note I know of myself and another women that bleed like that around that time and our children from those pregnancies are happy and healthy. For both of us I believe it was called subchronic bleeding... or someting similar to that. Basically blood clots caught between the placenta and the uterus that have become lose. This can potentially cause a lot of bleeding and be very scary when it happens - but also can be manageable. You just never know.

The standard procedure at this point will likely be to take too blood test to measure the HCG in her blood about 48 hours apart. At this point in pregnancy you'll want to see them roughly double.

I wish her the best!!

I'm so, so sorry. A loss, no matter how far along you are, hurts so much.

When I had my miscarriage I found it was so helpful to talk to other women that had been in the same place as me and could relate to how I was feeling. There's a group on the IVillage messageboards called TTC after Miscarriage - http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppttcmiss - when your friend is ready this board is filled with caring women that are all going through the same thing. She might find it helpful.

Again I'm so, so sorry.
