Pregnancy, Vyvanse (ADHD drug) and Lamictal (Cyclothymia)
Hello,
My wife and I would like to try for a baby however my wife is currently taking Vyvanse for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Lamictal for Cyclothymia.
She has discussed Vyvanse with the psychiatrist who prescribed her Vyvanse and Lamictal for her and it was recommended that she stop taking Vyvanse as soon as she knows she is pregnant. I believe she is currently taking 50mg of Vyvanse per day. She was told that taking Lamictal during pregnancy will be ok. However, in her discussions with her Obstetrician and Gynecologist she was told to stop taking all drugs. The challenge is that the Vyvanse and Lamictal really help her from day to day.
I have reviewed the Vyvanse and Lamictal manufacturer's websites for information on both drugs and found that they are both classed as FDA Category C drugs during pregnancy. There is some discussion of the impact of these drugs on rats during laboratory testing. I have also reviewed several websites but have found no definitive advice. I’m not sure I’m going to find definitive advice but I’m definitely trying.
Given the lack of clear information on the use of Vyvanse up until falling pregnant (the FDA Category C definition is not crystal clear because the drug is fairly new) I was wondering what others have been told with regards to using Vyvanse up until falling pregnant and then during pregnancy?
If you also have information on Lamictal please let me know.
The manufacturer's websites for both Vyvanse and Lamictal suggesting "weighing the risks and benefits,” which I find of limited usefulness.
Regards,
Ben
