Default Shut up the fire alarm: Coping with Stress

Did you ever set your kitchen on fire? Burnt your pancakes? Baked things the wrong way? Couldn’t sleep all night? These and other things become an overwhelming load we can’t bear. What about your in-laws? A flat tired in the middle of the express way, uncomfortable shoes; lay off, no money to buy Christmas presents, etc. The list goes on and on. However, if we are sincere with ourselves, most of these things are not as important and overwhelming as they seem to be. Sometimes we make it look overwhelming. Every problem always has a solution. There comes the monster problem… and the solution comes right after, tail-like. Really, think about all those ‘bad’ and ‘horrible’ things that have happened to you. Where they really that bad? Of course, the death of a love one, moving out from a house you have lived for more than 20 years, getting a divorce, a job overseas. It’ll take longer time for you to cope with and adapt to but it’s not impossible. Some people say ‘time cures everything.’ That’s not necessarily true. You have to let it go and time will do its part. Stress has been linked to depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal problems, impaired immune response and cancer. What triggers your stress? It might be something so minuscule you are not aware of. Perhaps, long commute, or a coworker with an attitude. Write down a weekly chart of all the things that cause you to behave negatively and come up with the bet solutions. I’m sure your stress level will lower.

Getting to the heart of the "stress" is very important and I like your suggestion of writing down what is a cause. Being stressed can often look like depression, but only a clinical diagnosis can determine that. There are many doctors that will be quick to prescribe antidepressant medications, but do so with caution. If you are pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant, do not take antidepressants. They can harm your baby.

You know what's funny is that people think that the solution to depression is drugs. It isn't. Depression is usually NOT a chemical issue, it is a how are you reacting to your enviornment issue, and how do you relate to people issue. What these drugs do is cause Zoloft birth defects. Taking drugs is like a dog barking to alert you when there's a fire. When your dog fire alarm goes off, do you shoot the dog? No. Do you muffle that dog's bark so you don't hear it as much? No. Do you drug up that dog so that now it doesn't make a sound? No. Do you do drug up that dog further causing that dog to go crazy, biting people, running in circles, all the while muzzling it so it doesnt' make a sound? No. You put out the fire. Depression is fire. Put it out. Don't shoot the messenger of depression by drugging up. Address the issue. Were you abused? Address it. Are you rebellious? Address why.

Calchao, thanks for sharing! I agree with you. My blog is about stress, not depression, and much less about drugs. You have to get to the root of the problem and address it...

Yeah too many, their first reaction is drugs, or worse, their first reaction is to hit up their doctor, get 3 scrips, and either zone out or speed wayyy up. Which of course never addreses the issue.

Hi I feel anxious and stressed out because I'm a claustraphobe who works in a nuclear submarine 9 months of a year....

hmmmmmm

By simply breathing in and breathing out you could certainly lower down your stress level. You need to divert on what makes you feel happy to forget what's making you stress. Chill out and forget all your worries for a little while. Don't let stress role over your life

Try listening to some soothing lullabies - they're great for both mom and baby - not to mention older children.
