My ribs really hurt is this normal or should I be concerned?

The baby can be in almost any position during the middle part of pregnancy but it is usually head down during the latter part of the pregnancy. This means that a lot of kicks end up going to the ribs and the baby’s bottom is pushed up under the ribs. This makes the ribs sore and painful in the last trimester especially. It is a normal phenomenon of pregnancy and you shouldn’t be concerned by it.

Some things you can do are to take Tylenol during the pregnancy to reduce the pain and you can also lie down on your back or on the opposite side as the pain to see if the baby will shift off of the position it is in and onto another area of your ribs. Fortunately, this passes after the baby drops during the last few weeks of pregnancy. There will be more room for both you and the baby and the rib pain should abate.

While most of the time rib pain is very normal. I would recommend that if the pain is Right sided pain and very tender to report this to your caregiver. Right sided rib like pain can be associated with HELLP syndrome a very serious variant of pre-eclampsia. About HELLP
