Default Scared of Needles - What Other Pain Relief Can I Get?

Just the thought of giving birth petrifies me. I don't think I will be able to handle the pain. But I am also afraid of needles and don't really want an epidural. What can I do?

You don’t need an epidural. There are so many other childbirth options, you’ll be amazed. I think you should first go to a childbirth class and for a tour of your hospital or birthing center. You will likely learn a lot about the different natural childbirth methods that will help you handle the pain.

Some people swear that laboring in a tub or shower is very relaxing and will reduce your pain. There is also a method that includes hypnosis to help you handle the pain.

Although you have a needle phobia, you should know that epidurals aren’t the only medical pain relief available. You can also receive narcotic pain relief via IV (which you may have hooked up anyway for fluids/hydration).

Talk to your obstetrician or midwife about their recommendations. You may also want to investigate hiring a doula to help support you through the birthing process.

I used to be super scared of needles too!
You don't have to have an IV and you can use so many other techniques to ease the pain and discomfort of labor. Often, the pain is very much increased when you are highly anxious or fearful. Learning how to relax and let go of fear during your pregnancy will be helpful when you're in labor. Using a technique like hypnobirthing is very helpful for many moms. Having professional labor support is also highly recommended by many experienced moms. A professional labor support person, sometimes called a doula, will know many different positions and techniques that make coping with labor contractions a lot easier. Getting into a warm jacuzzi tub, taking a shower, having someone massage your back, your feet, using pressure points and using aromatherapy and music are all ways to cope with labor without having to use any IV meds or IM (intramuscular) meds. If this sounds good to you, search out a natural childbirth instructor in your area or a doula and interview them to see if they'd be a good fit for you and your partner. Most doulas and childbirth instructors who teach in or out of a hospital setting will likely give a free initial consultation.

I hate needles, scared to death of them.... But...... I have 5 kids and have had an epidural and IV with each.... I am a big baby when it comes to pain, so I went with the no pain option... on baby # 4 the epidural started to wear off and my husband said "I don't think she wants to do the epidural again.... He was wrong(totally) that contraction hit and I didn't care I wanted another epidural....NOW..... But then again, I am a big baby (:

Here is my advice, check out all of your options with an open mind, there a millions of brave women out there that have baby's naturally, no pain killers, no nothing... My hats off to you ladies.... And then their are Big Babies like me, who couldn't fathom having a baby without the assistance of medical intervention. Hmm maybe thats why I have 5? Anyway, check out all the options, make your birthing plan, and also make a secondary birthing plan... Just incase you decide that needles are better than pain...

Good Luck
