I have partial placenta previa and will need a c-section. I am 36 weeks pregnant and now my doctor has recommended that we do an amnio to find out whether the baby's lungs are mature enough yet. What exactly does that mean?

The most important thing happening over those last few weeks of pregnancy is your baby’s lung development. You want those lungs to be as mature as possible before your baby is born. The best way to check for lung maturity is amniocentesis. An amnio is performed by inserting a long hollow needle through your abdominal skin and through the uterine wall. The fetal cells contained within the amniotic fluid are then sent to a lab for testing.
