How does what I eat now during pregnancy impact my baby’s tastes later in life. I am 28 weeks pregnant and can’t stop eating sweet foods. Usually, I do not care that much for sweets. My weight gain is average but I worry that the baby will get used to the sweet taste and will later crave it.

The fetus takes in basic sugars, proteins and fats through the umbilical cord and doesn't actually "taste" anything you eat while it is in the uterus. It is impossible to pass on a sweet tooth to a fetus when the mother has a propensity to eat sweets.

Remember that women process sugars differently in pregnancy and there can be things like diabetes of pregnancy or gestational diabetes that will be made significantly worse by eating sweets during pregnancy. Your diet should be as balanced as possible and should include foods containing protein, small amounts of fat and complex carbohydrates in them.

Your baby won't get a taste for sweets, but his liver and pancreas that are just developing certainly will react! Overloading on sugar is not good for you or your baby, and as mentioned, gestational diabetes is a concern. Babies that are truly born with uncontrolled diabetes can be very large (tougher delivery for you) with unstable health. When you eat, pretend that you are feeding your baby with a spoon directly. Once you become conscious of this you will find those sweets less tempting. I know it is hard to pass them up. I allowed myself whatever I wanted to eat in my first pregnancy, and of course my favorites were sugar and carbs. I developed borderline gestational diabetes. The pounds were sure hard to lose afterward, too! Lucky for you summer is here with all the sweet fruits and berries in season! Enjoy!
