Default Should I take prenatal vitamins anyway?

I just had my first prenatal check-up. My doctor said that it is not necessary to take a prenatal vitamin if you eat a balanced diet. It seems everyone else is taking extra vitamins though. Should I trust my doctor or take some anyway?

There are some doctors who think that taking a prenatal vitamin is unnecessary if you eat a balanced diet. The truth is, however, that vitamins like folate should be taken in higher than normal amounts and are best taken in a prenatal vitamin.

Women, too, don’t always stick to a perfectly balanced diet so the taking of a prenatal vitamin can assure that she’s always getting the proper nutrients. Remember that most prenatal vitamins contain little or no calcium so you still have to drink your milk and eat your cheese in order to get the calcium you need.
