Default Re:When your water breaks does that cause contractions?

Some people start labor and then need to have their water broken by the doctor. Others break their water at home. When you break the water, you usually go into labor shortly after than but there are many women who don’t go into labor after they break their bag of waters and have to be induced.

The reason that breaking the bag of waters can bring on labor is because the bag of waters was cushioning the cervix from the head and without the bag of waters, the head pushes down on the cervix more, releasing hormones that bring on labor. The labor usually progresses faster after rupturing the bag of waters because the head pushes directly on the cervix, causing it to open faster. This is partly why doctors break the bag of waters during a person’s labor. It helps an ineffective labor move along faster and the baby is born sooner.
