Re:What is cephalopelvic disproportion?
Cephalopelvic disproportion is a condition where the head does not fit in the pelvis and gets stuck somewhere along the way. Usually the labor proceeds to ten centimeters and pushing begins but it gets nowhere. The woman can push for two to three hours without any significant progress toward delivery of the child.
It can be due to the head being sideways or face up; it can be due to having a big baby that just is too big to fit; it can be due to an abnormally triangular pelvis that doesn’t admit the roundness of the head. Regardless of the cause, cephalopelvic disproportion usually means having a cesarean section to deliver the baby.
It is disheartening to get as far as pushing the baby out and then ending up with a Cesarean section but things like cephalopelvic disproportion are difficult to predict in advance and one always wants to have a trial of labor even if it seems like the baby is bigger than average.
